Privacy Policy
UW Degree Planner. Effective October 19, 2026.
UW Degree Planner ("the service") helps UW–Madison students plan their degree from a DARS audit or Course Search & Enroll degree plan, through AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. It is an independent project operated by Rupan Sunderapandyan and is not affiliated with the University of Wisconsin–Madison. This policy explains what the service collects, how it is used, and your choices.
Information we collect
- Documents you share. When you ask the assistant to read a DARS audit or degree plan, the service downloads that file once from a temporary link your AI provider supplies, extracts text from it in memory, and discards the file. It is never written to disk.
- Your plan. From that text the service saves the course list (course codes, terms, credits, grades, and enrollment status), your catalog year, the credit totals the audit reports, the majors and certificates you choose, your target graduation term, and any edits you make. It does not save your name, student ID, advisor names, or the rest of the audit text.
- Technical data. Server logs record the request path, response status, and timing. Our network provider, Cloudflare, processes connection data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the service.
The service has no accounts and uses no cookies, advertising, or cross-site tracking. Its web pages (not the assistant integration) count anonymous page views with self-hosted Umami analytics, which records the page, referrer, browser, and country, and stores no cookies or IP addresses.
How we use it
Your plan is used only to answer your questions in the conversation: remaining requirements, course recommendations, schedules, and graduation estimates. It is not used for advertising, profiling, or training AI models, and it is not combined with other data.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your information with third parties, except: Cloudflare, which carries network traffic to our servers; and the AI provider you use, which receives the tool results in your conversation and handles them under its own privacy policy (for example OpenAI or Anthropic). We may disclose information if required by law.
Retention and deletion
Each plan is identified by a random id held by your conversation. A plan is deleted automatically 30 days after it was last used. You can delete it at any time by asking the assistant to delete your plan, or by emailing rupanpandyan@gmail.com with the plan id (the assistant can show it to you). Server logs are kept only as long as needed to operate the service.
Security
All traffic uses HTTPS. Plans are stored on servers the operator runs in the United States, readable only by the service, and accessible only by the random plan id. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, so please share only the documents the service needs.
Your choices
You can use the service without uploading a document by typing your courses, ask for your plan to be deleted at any time, and stop using the service whenever you like. You may also contact us to ask what is stored for a plan id.
Children
The service is meant for university students and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the effective date above will change. Material changes will be noted on this page.
